Maya Joint Biography and Early Life

Joint was born in Grosse Pointe in the Detroit area of Michigan into a racquet sports family. Her father Michael Mick Joint is a Melbourne born former professional squash player who left Australia at 19 to chase the sport and played in Argentina and Canada and Germany. In Germany he met her mother Katja Joint who competed in squash and tennis and badminton. The couple settled in Detroit in 2004 and moved back to Australia in 2025 when Mick took a coaching role at the MCC Squash Club.

Maya started tennis in kindergarten hitting balls with her father on local Michigan courts and often used squash racquets. That unusual start gave her great feel for the ball. Her mother travelled with her to nearly every tournament until she was 16.

Switching to Australia and the NCAA Controversy

A dual citizen of Australia and the United States from birth she represented the US in her early junior years. In mid 2023 at age 17 she chose to represent her father country and moved to Brisbane to train at the Tennis Australia National Academy with players such as Ajla Tomljanovic and Kim Birrell. She later settled in Melbourne in 2025. She says she owes her career to Tennis Australia and calls the Billie Jean King Cup her proudest memory.

Her path nearly went through US college tennis as she committed to the University of Texas for 2024 and 2025. In August 2024 she had to give up 140000 US dollars in US Open prize money to protect her NCAA eligibility. The ruling was widely criticised and Andy Roddick called it absurd. In December 2024 she turned professional and she still studies a criminal justice program through Indiana University East with a goal of becoming a detective one day.

Maya Joint Playing Style Racket and Team

Joint is an aggressive right handed baseliner with a two handed backhand. Clay is her favourite surface because she trained on it every summer with her grandparents in Germany and she loves to slide. She also moves well on hard courts and her early years with squash racquets gave her unusually good hands. She is quick and a fierce competitor and holds a brown belt in karate which earned her the Ginger Ninja nickname.

She names Roger Federer and Ash Barty as her idols and says Simona Halep is her favourite WTA player. She plays with a Yonex racket and wears the Australian brand Elite Eleven.
