Daniil Medvedev at the BNP Paribas Open

Indian Wells is one of Medvedev’s strongest Masters 1000 events and his most frustrating. The slow, high bouncing hard court suits his deep return, counter punching game, and he has reached the final three times. Each time he has finished runner up, making the Indian Wells trophy one of the most notable gaps on an elite hard court résumé. See the full Indian Wells schedule for the event calendar.

2026 Indian Wells Result

Seeded 11th, Medvedev produced one of the runs of the tournament. In the semifinals he ended World Number 1 Carlos Alcaraz’s unbeaten start to the season in two sets, his first win over Alcaraz since the 2023 US Open, having dropped no sets all week on the way past Alejandro Tabilo, Sebastián Báez, Alex Michelsen and defending champion Jack Draper. He reached the final on an 18 match set winning streak but lost to Jannik Sinner in two tight tiebreak sets, falling short of a first Indian Wells title for the third time.

Medvedev’s 2023 and 2024 Finals

Medvedev reached the Indian Wells final in both 2023 and 2024, losing to Carlos Alcaraz on each occasion. Combined with the 2026 defeat to Sinner, that gives him three final appearances at the event and a record among the best of any man never to have won it.

He turned professional in 2014 and relocated to the south of France to train, which is why he speaks fluent French and English alongside Russian.

Medvedev attended a specialist physics and maths school in Moscow, finishing his final two years early, and briefly studied economics and commerce at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) before leaving to focus on tennis. Daniil Medvedev’s Playing Style

Medvedev is the game’s definitive counter puncher. He returns from an extremely deep position behind the baseline, hits flat, heavy groundstrokes off one of the best backhands on tour, and grinds opponents down with relentless consistency and exceptional court coverage for a 6 ft 6 in frame. His biggest weapon is reliability, as he forces errors rather than blasting winners, and his tactical intelligence has earned him a reputation as a chess master on court. He is coached by a team that, as of 2026, includes Andrey Golubev and Rohan Goetzke, following his long partnership with Gilles Cervara, which ended in 2025. Compare him with Alexander Zverev and Alexander Bublik.
