Ben Shelton Outlook for 2027
Coming off a 2026 US Open final and his career high ranking, Shelton arrives as one of the favorites and the leading home hope. His best run at Indian Wells so far is the 2025 quarterfinal, so a semifinal or final would be a career best here. He will have to get past rivals such as Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, along with fellow Americans Taylor Fritz and Learner Tien.
Ben Shelton Serve and Playing Style
Ben Shelton has one of the fastest serves in tennis. He recorded a 151 mph serve in Washington in July 2026 and regularly serves above 140 mph in big moments. He plays with a Yonex racket, pairs the serve with a heavy left handed forehand and elite athleticism, and attacks the net, which makes him dangerous on the fast Indian Wells hard courts.
Ben Shelton Family and Parents
Ben Shelton comes from a deeply rooted tennis family and chose the sport for himself rather than being pushed into it.
Father and Coach Bryan Shelton
The most important tennis figure in Ben’s life is his father Bryan Shelton, a former professional who reached the top 60 and made the fourth round of Wimbledon in 1994. After retiring he coached the University of Florida men’s team for eleven years, where Ben played college tennis, then left in 2023 to coach Ben full time on tour. The two have learned to separate the roles of coach and father, and their personalities balance each other.
Mother Lisa Witsken Shelton
Ben’s mother Lisa Witsken Shelton also comes from a tennis family. She played seriously as a junior and her brother Todd Witsken was a professional who reached the top of the doubles game, so Ben’s roots run through both sides of the family. She is more private than Bryan but regularly attends his biggest tournaments.
Sister Emma Shelton
Ben’s older sister Emma was a strong junior and played college tennis at South Carolina and Florida, then chose a career in finance rather than the professional tour. She has become one of the most recognizable faces in his player box. At Wimbledon in 2025 he used an on court interview to jokingly ask her employer for more time off so she could keep supporting him, calling his sister his lucky charm.
Ben Shelton Ethnicity
Ben Shelton is biracial. His father Bryan Shelton is African American and his mother Lisa Witsken Shelton is white. By reaching the 2026 US Open final he became the first African American man in a Grand Slam final since MaliVai Washington at Wimbledon in 1996, and the first in a US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972.
Ben Shelton Girlfriend Trinity Rodman
Ben Shelton is not married and has no children. Since March 2025 he has been in a relationship with Trinity Rodman, a forward for the United States women’s national soccer team and the Washington Spirit and an Olympic gold medalist, who is the daughter of NBA legend Dennis Rodman.
Ben Shelton Education, College and Football
Ben Shelton attended Buchholz High School in Gainesville Florida. As a child he preferred American football and played quarterback, and only took tennis seriously around the age of 12. At the University of Florida he studied finance, helped the team win the 2021 NCAA title and won the 2022 NCAA singles championship, earning SEC and National Player of the Year before turning professional.
Ben Shelton Titles
Ben Shelton has won 7 ATP singles titles including two Masters 1000 crowns, plus one doubles title. The highlights are the Canadian Open in Toronto in 2025 and in Montreal in 2026, Tokyo in 2023, Houston in 2024, and Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart in 2026. His best Grand Slam result is runner up at the 2026 US Open.
Ben Shelton Awards and Honors
He was the 2022 NCAA singles champion and SEC and National Player of the Year at the University of Florida.
