Who Is Taylor Fritz

Taylor Fritz is an American professional tennis player and the leading US man on the ATP Tour. He reached the 2024 US Open final, his first Grand Slam final and the first by an American man since 2009. He was runner up at the 2024 ATP Finals and won Olympic bronze in doubles at Paris 2024. His game is built on a huge serve and heavy flat groundstrokes.

Taylor Fritz World Ranking

Fritz is ranked World Number 10 in ATP singles as of mid September 2026. He first entered the top 10 in 2022 and has been the American number one for much of the period since.

Career High Ranking

His career high is World Number 4, reached on 18 November 2024. It was the highest year end ranking for an American man since James Blake in 2006.

Leading American on Tour

Fritz has held the American number one spot for most of the last four seasons, ahead of a deep group that includes Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul and Learner Tien.

Taylor Fritz Family Background

Fritz was born into a tennis family.

Parents

Father Guy Fritz

A former professional player and longtime coach who shaped his son early game.

Mother Kathy May

A former WTA top 10 player in the late 1970s.

Brothers and Family Legacy

Fritz has two older maternal half brothers named Chris and Kyle Paben. Through his mother’s family he is also a descendant of the founder of the May Department Stores, which later merged into Macy’s.

Early Life Education and Junior Career

Raised in the San Diego area, Fritz attended Torrey Pines High School before switching to online schooling so he could play junior events full time. He won the 2015 US Open boys singles title and finished that year as ITF Junior World Champion. He then turned professional in 2015 instead of attending college.

Taylor Fritz Playing Style in His Own Words

Fritz offers candid insight into the modern game and his own equipment, first hand detail that is rarely found in standard profiles.

On the Modern Game

He argues that today’s balls are softer and more pressurized, which makes them feel good off the strings but travel and bounce slower. In his view that is a bigger reason the game is slowing down than court speed, which he believes has not really changed.

On the Serve

His father taught him to think of a serve like an archer drawing a bow, with everything slow and balanced until the explosive release.

On His Equipment

He uses a closed 18 by 20 string pattern, less common on today’s tour, for control on flat driven balls. He strings around 53 lb on the mains with slightly looser crosses.

On Adaptability

He once played a junior event with a borrowed racquet, a different brand with different strings and grip, after leaving his bag on a train. He won a set without losing a point, the only golden set of his career.

On Coaching

He is a vocal critic of on court coaching and values the individual problem solving nature of tennis.
